Netbooks With AMD?
November 15, 2008 by Joel
AMD recently announced two new Processors “Yukon” and “Congo” Yukon looks like the sort of processor that would go in a netbook. The company is saying that these are for more of an Ultra portable type computer such as the MacBook Air. They stated it was more for thin but large displayed laptops. While they said it could become a Smaller netbook like computer, it may not and isn’t the focus of these chips.
With these computers AMD want’s to use their recently aquired ATI graphics partner to take advantage of their technology and use it to create a “Full PC Experience.” They want to offer a better higher performance experience for users and stated that the “Customers are not satisfied with the experience on mini-notebooks.” AMD stated the MacBook Air is the size of computer that is “Ideal.”
These processors will use less power and provide more power using the ATI chipset that will be built in. The processors and chipset are supposed to use less than 25 Watts. Currently the Turion use more than 30 watts. Yukon will be single core while Congo will have 2 Cores. The core technology will be “Huron” and “Conesus.” These new CPU’s are meant to cover a larger variety of computers than the intels do. This is what AMD emphasized. I’m wondering how good these chips will be as AMD has never been good with laptops performance or battery wise. Will they get it this time?
