HP & Dell Select Broadcom Chip For Remote Management Of Customer PCs
March 14, 2009 by Sanjay
When PC vendors such as HP and Dell take on contracts from large customers to manage their PCs for them, they have to spend a huge chunk of their profits on manpower costs, communication and travelling costs in order to ensure that the PCs are up and running the way the contracts they should. By now deploying a chip that is embedded in the motherboard, they can save on the costs and make more profits by shifting from onsite management to remote management.
The chip that has been selected to be deployed is Broadcom’s BCM5761. This is a 10/100/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) controller which comes with a proprietary technology that Broadcom calls “TruManage”. This technology supports DASH (Desktop and Mobile Architecture for System Hardware) and the PMCI (Platform Management Component Intercommunication) protocols which are standard across the PC world. The chip enables system support personnel to manage PCs deployed anywhere in the world from a single console, allows software updates and security patches to be deployed during “off-peak” hours, as well as monitor system status at any time.
